Origin Story

How did we start?

The Coming Into Your Own program evolved out of years of exploration and collaboration initially by a small group of women friends who were all involved in leadership development, organizational learning, and dialogue work.
They began meeting in 1995. This circle, now known as the Circle of Seven, continued meeting for eight years. The women who created this circle were Barbara Coffman-Cecil, Anne Dosher, Glennifer Gillespie, Beth Jandernoa, Leslie Lanes, and Serena Newby. The seventh place represents the presence of the Great Spirit and provides an occasional space for an invited guest.

The Circle of Seven

In 1998, the Circle of Seven was approached by a group of young women who were also organizational development consultants, who asked for a program that would support them in their life journeys and develop their leadership capacity. This led to The Ashland Institute receiving a grant from the Fetzer Institute to support the design and delivery of, and research for, a pioneering mentorship program for young women leaders from different parts of the world. In addition to being run in the USA and the UK, it had also been tested in South Africa with women of different religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds for applicability and relevance.
Over the years, CIYO has evolved into an offering that assists women worldwide who want to reflect on their lives, deepen their understanding of themselves, make important life transitions and increase their ability to live “from the inside out.” The program has been translated into 7 different languages and presented in over 13 countries.
A Facilitator development program and an apprentice track have helped to support those interested in leading CIYO offerings for women in corporate, nonprofit, and individual settings. Though the core CIYO program is offered locally in many countries, it still has the global connection and support for the facilitator community. Faculty and apprentices meet virtually regularly to support each other and advance the program.
